Job Costing

What is job costing?

Definition

Tracking labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead costs against each individual project and cost code, so you know what every job actually costs.

The basics

Every cost is coded to a job and a cost code that mirrors the estimate. That lets you compare budget to actual line by line and catch overruns while there's still time to act.

  • Labor, including burden like payroll taxes and benefits
  • Materials and equipment
  • Subcontractor costs
  • Job-specific overhead such as permits and temporary facilities

The estimated remaining cost to finish a job. Together with costs to date, it sets total estimated cost and drives percent complete.

Costs you've contractually agreed to but haven't been invoiced for yet, such as open purchase orders and subcontract balances.

A decline in a job's projected gross profit over its life, comparing the margin at bid or contract to the margin projected today.
